Structal-Bridges Begins Delivery of 70-Ton Box Girders for Highway 25 Bridge

(QUEBEC, QC) – Structal-Bridges, the largest steel bridge manufacturer in Canada and a division of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM), today began the delivery of 37-foot (11.3 m) box girders weighing 70 tons each that will be used in the construction of cable-stayed section of the new bridge on Highway 25.

Due to the sizeable weight of the 11-foot (3.4 m) wide steel girders, Structal-Bridges must employ oversized load transport equipment in order to deliver the components. A 10-axle low bed semi-trailer carrying the first girder left the Quebec City plant under escort at 9:30 a.m. this morning headed for the bridge work site in Laval, where the components will be erected with a crane barge. Seven other such deliveries will take place over the coming weeks to transport the eight box girders required for this section of the bridge structure.

Structal-Bridges secured the contract for the construction of the six-lane steel bridge, which will span the Rivière des Prairies between Montreal and Laval, as well as three overpasses in 2007 as part of the extension of Highway 25. By the end of 2010, the business unit will have transformed more than 12,000 tons of steel to fabricate a total of 378 girders in the scope of this project, which is one of the largest undertaken by Structal-Bridges in Canada and worth over $30 million. Approximately 25% of fabrication is completed. Structal has already fabricated and delivered the components required for the construction of two of the three overpasses and is poised to fabricate the remaining 50% of the girders required for the Montreal shore approach ramp to the main bridge.

“The fabrication of a cable-stayed bridge is a highly complex undertaking that requires extreme precision and top-notch engineering, a challenge that our team welcomes," explained Robin Lapointe, general manager of Structal-Bridges. “Along with the Pitt River cable-stayed bridge that is currently under construction in British Columbia for the same general contractor, Kiewit, this is the second bridge contract of this type that Structal-Bridges has obtained since the company’s beginnings, which confirms our expertise and leadership in the industry.”
