Structal-Bridges obtains a $16.5M contract to rebuild the Dominion Bridge

(QUEBEC CITY, QC) – Structal-Bridges, the largest steel bridge manufacturer in Canada and a division of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM), landed a $16.5-million contract for the reconstruction of the Dominion Bridge located on Highway 132 in Lévis, Quebec, at the approach to the Quebec City Bridge.

This contract, which was awarded by general contractor EBC Inc., calls for the fabrication and installation of 3,500 tons of metallized structural steel components, including eight massive 131-foot (40 m) delta legs weighing 125 tons each. Goodco Z-Tech, a product of Structal-Bridges, will supply all structural bearings and expansion joints.

The existing bridge will be replaced by a new 761-foot (232 m) long structure and expanded from two to four lanes. The reconstruction is expected to be completed in 2011.

“Structal-Bridges’ 50 years of expertise in undertaking complex bridge projects was a key factor in securing this contract,” stated Robin Lapointe, general manager of the business unit. “We are proud of this recognition and the fact that we are also contributing to the improvement of our region’s highway infrastructure.”

In addition to the fabrication of delta legs, an equally complex task will be the erection of large-scale girders over the Chaudière River canyon at an altitude of some 174 feet (53 m) in close proximity to the CN railway bridge. Structal-Bridges plans to address these challenges by making full use of its team’s extensive know-how and the collaboration of its project partners.
